Notes:

Start date of blog is the current blog and not any previous incarnation of that blog or bloggers connected with it.

Alexa (international not nz) ranking approximate average daily traffic equivalent:
0.5m=c.500, 1m=c.280, 1.5m=c.250, 2m=c.220, 2.5m=c.120, 3m=c.100, 3.5m=c.70, 4m=c.60, 5m=c.50, 6m=c.40, 7m=c.30, 8-10m=c.20, No data=c.10. Site counter if available will be used instead of Alexa if credible.

If ttlb link score is n/a then technorati authority is doubled in lieu. Because of credibility issues with ttlb the ttlb link score cannot be more than the technorati authority: such instances indicated by "(max.?)".

nice list and methodology although it favours the suckasses that link whore.

How frequently are you going to update?

I recently passed Public Address in Alexa both NZ ratings and World.

Tim Selwyn said...

I have been monitoring your alarming rise in popularity :) I think it's because you put the effort in, to be honest.

But you ask a serious question.

I discounted the pre-Christmas drop-off, but could not counter the effects of the temporary traffic increase with all the anarchist blogs associated with the "terrorism" raids in October (which was a temporary spike), so I was conservative and roughly averaged out the data for the period to reflect more what the situation was rather than tracking what it would be at the end of the period... therefore you are probably, maybe, under-scored. HOWEVER: I do acknowledge that the figures do fluctuate and are not always accurate - hopefully the actual ranking is still fair.

The scores indicate quite a step between the top 6 (which you are in) and those which are less than half that score (which unfortunately we still are).

I plan to update every month - but given that all the links are provided with each entry it could, *could*, be done even every week... ? It is possible, but realistically it would be a bit of a chore - but compared with making the list, monitoring it will be a breeze.

The other issue we had was what to do with Perigo's Libertarian masturbation circle "SOLO Passion" - it meets the definition we have, but the tone is so much like an internal discussion forum rather than an outward-facing "public discourse" blog that we decided to exclude it - or else it would be number 3! I kid you not.

Tim Selwyn said...

Oh - and link whoring. Yes, it's a factor we tried to minimise by preferring the more reliable (to my mind) technorati authority over the ttlb figures. It's a problem I don't think can ever fully be addressed.

Richard said...

Well I must be inadvertently link whoring, since there's no way I'm in the top 150.

Are any of these non-political blogs?

Tim Selwyn said...

Heh I'm "other".. :
Yes, please indicate if your details need to be amended or expanded. Later on I'll render something so that proper categories can be made for common labels.

Are any of these non-political blogs? :
Yes. The definition of "public discourse" that we are using encompasses more than just political blogs. A working idea was "original editorial material that often has a political dimension, and/or considers themselves to be part of a political/public policy discourse." But what we are describing here is a bit wider than the pure "political" blogosphere to include other sorts of current affairs issues. Part of a national online conversation about our country might be too grand a way of saying it.

If the blogger has niche subject matter that does not attempt to engage with the wider community at all (acting like internal religious or partisan discussion fora) then that seems reason to exclude it I think. I have found that these will be line calls rather than easy decisions to make.

So, yes: the purely political blogs are just much more popular that is why they dominate the top of the list and give the impression it is exclusively political blogs. But down a little in the rankings you will see Brain Stab, and LAWS 179: Elephants and the law, Dig 'n' Stir, Born on State Highway One etc. which only occasionally have political content.

Rick said...

Good on you for taking it on.

My Silent Running co-bloggers are Yanks.

I can confirm that SOLO takes upwards of 800 unique hits per day but I don't think it belongs in the list.

Wattyler said...

This is really interesting but I'm afraid there are pretty serious flaws in the methodology.

You weigh a unique visit the same as an incoming link and the same as a post, on what basis?

Your basis for estimating Public Address's daily unique readship at 1500 is a Scoop advertising post that says PA gets 10,000 unique readers a week. You've simply divided 10,000 by 7, which does not follow because it assumes there are 10,000 people each coming one day a week - in fact, the daily unique hits will be somewhere between 1,500 and 10,000.

Whaleoil's 800 average visits are not unique visits. Look at the extremely low ratio of page views to visits (1.6) compared to other sites like Farrar's where the visits is unique visits (5 page views per unique visitor). According to sitemeter, on his best days Whaleoil gets as many page views as we get on an average day: its not credible that he gets 3 times as many unique vistors.

There must be a problem with Alexa's measurements (likely, given the fact that it only measures traffic from users with the Alexa toolbar) or the way you are deriving unique daily visitors from them. In the two months from Nov 1 to Dec 31, Kiwiblogblog got 65,000 hits, just over 2,000 a day (average daily hits grew around 100% over that time frame). It's possible that those 2000 hits came from 260 unique vistors but that assumes a relatively high 8 page views per visitor (we are unlikely to be getting more page views per visitor than Kiwiblog, which is notorious for its massive flame wars between a few commenators). More seriously, you have The Standard on 280 unique vistors a day, as they're getting around 20,000 hits a day that's just not credible, that would have to getting 60 odd page views per unique vistor: The Standard is in Farrar's league, not ours.

Still, it's a good concept and if blogs (like us) help out by having more comphrensive stats available some of these bugs can be ironed out.

Tim Selwyn said...

Rick: - thanks, will make the adjustment.

wattyler: - thanks for helping with the ironing :)
yes I put all the traffic figures as circa "c." because of just these problems you mention. We have two different meters on the Tumeke blog and they are sometimes differing by several dozen when they should be the same - but which one is correct? or are they both wrong?

Alexa is problematic, but unless everyone gets the same meters and makes them publicly accessible there seems to be no other way to estimate traffic. If there is another way please tell me!

I have compared on-site meters with Alexa for these blogs and think that though it is imperfect it is, nevertheless, a reasonable guide. I gave the traffic estimates from the Alexa rankings based on what I have observed and not what Alexa says per se.

I will investigate the other issues you raise also.

Russell Brown said...

Hi Tim,

I suspect Kiwiblog is ahead of Public Address on traffic, but Alexa is really just a string of random numbers. I don't know anyone who has the Alexa toolbar installed. Why would you?

FWIW, PA gets about 5000 visits a day when everyone's at work, and we have somewhere between 23,000 and 28,000 unique users every month. I think we suffer a little on Technorati through not being on a recognised blogging platform.

But you've missed easily the most-trafficked (and most respected) New Zealand blog: Richard McManus's Read Write Web has more traffic than all of us put together.

Anyway, good initiative and I'm sure it'll get better.

Cheers,
RB

Tim Selwyn said...

Yes, Russell I hope to improve it. Thanks for your stats, I'll ask you what they are for the next survey.

I note David Farrar has put his annual stats up, inter alia:
Unique Visits: 2,697,578
Posts Made: 2,962

So that means:
7390 average daily visits
57 posts per week

As for Read Write Web - it is a blog, he is a Wellingtonian, but to quote from his last post "RWW's mission to provide in-depth news and analysis about Web Technology." That does not meet our definition.

Che, I am aware of your blog but the content is primarily personal and reviews. I know you have lamented the public service conduct issues that stop you being politique.

NZBC is another notable exclusion. I had assumed it met the criteria, but after reviewing it over time its subject matter was not right. Subject matter can change over time too. It's not as if these blogs are banished forever or anything.

There is no reflection whatsoever on these decisions and the merit of the blog - or popularity either eg. Spare room. "Public discourse" is the concept - I would think reviews are not in that category, but I'm open to other ideas.

hmmm... did you hit the "government" or "new zealand" tags?

the reviews are mostly filler.

Hey guys, this is a nice idea but there seem to be some real accuracy issues.

Having looked at our stats I can tell you for a fact that the Alexa figures you've used are only a fraction of the real size of our readership.

How does one go about correcting this?

Tane: Alexa is spyware and the user doesn't know they have it (I have to investigate this) - and Russell's comments about Alexa being "random numbers" is not true - just go and compare the actual on-site counters with the Alexa figures and they are surprisingly close - usually. This was my distinct feeling as I went through the list anyway which is why I grew to trust their data enough to give it a lot of weight in the formula.

But with fast-moving traffic growth a site might suffer from a lag in reporting (I'm thinking). That could be an issue here... perhaps.

re: How does one go about correcting this?
By telling me what the figures are as Russell and DPF have done - or else if you put on a public counter I will pick it up in the next survey and use that data.

Can I just say that Hot Topic (number 50 with a bullet) is produced from Waipara, not Auckland.
